Toyota Prius T3

Price: £19,855, CO2 emissions: 89g/km

IT’S now a decade since the original Prius arrived in the UK, but the third-generation model is the first to dip below 100g/km.

Futuristic looks mean it’s the car to go for if you want to shout about your environmental efforts. From behind the wheel, the blend of petrol engine and electric motor is at its best in town, where silent battery powered running is satisfying.

On open roads it isn’t as relaxing, because the CVT gearbox hunts through the rev range for power. And with the suspension having to cope with the weight of the electric motor, the Prius doesn’t handle or ride as well as some conventionally powered rivals. It’s clean, though – only the tiny Smart ForTwo CDI emits less CO2. Thanks to its skinnier wheels, the entry-level Prius T3 emits only 89g/km, while better equipped T4 and T Spirit models pump out a still impressive 92g/km.
