Classic SAAB tackles N24

Rally veteren Per Eklund to race 310bhp 900 Turbo in May’s event

SAAB 900 Turbo

SAAB’s future may be secure thanks to Spyker’s buyout. But that hasn’t stopped the firm looking backwards to go forwards by entering a classic 900 Turbo in the Nurburgring 24-hour race.

The car has been entered by a SAAB dealer from Hamburg, Germany and prepared by specialist Nico Gasparatos. And legendary Swedish rally driver Per Eklund will be one of the drivers who will take on the challenge of the Green Hell in May.

Built to Group A regulations, the 900 features a full roll cage, upgraded brakes and  a modified engine which now puts out 310bhp and 520Nm of torque at full boost. Top speed is 157mph.

Speaking about the event, Eklund said "when I got the offer to be able to compete with a classic Saab 900 Turbo on the Nordschleife, I immediately loved the idea." The 63-year-old driver last competed in the legendary endurance event 30 years ago.
