Clarion CZ head unit range

Price: From £149 Contact: www.clarion.co.uk

New cars are increasingly armed with the latest gadgets, such as iPod-friendly stereos – but if you want the same tech in your existing motor, audio specialist Clarion can help.

The firm’s CZ209E and CZ509E are new multi-format aftermarket head units that can accommodate MP3 CDs and other music sources.

A built-in USB port allows you to connect an Apple iPod or iPhone, and gives full control over the device via the facia. Memory sticks or portable music hard drives can also be hooked up in this way. Plus, there’s a 3.5mm aux socket, giving another MP3 solution, albeit without head unit control.

There is the option to play the radio, too, and amplification is through for four speakers, with a maximum of 50W each.

As with other models in the Clarion range, the facias can be removed for security. Plus, the CZ209E boasts a front-loading slot for compact discs.

The pricier 509E features Bluetooth, a remote control, additional pre-outs and the ability to play AAC files.

Verdict

Maker’s claim: “The new CZ range allows you to access a broad spectrum of sources, while delivering more of your music with better-sounding results.”
