Most reliable small cars to buy 2026
We reveal the most reliable small cars you can buy, according to our latest Driver Power survey
If you’re looking to buy a small car, chances are you’ll be on the hunt or something cheap to buy and run. It’s worth remembering, however, that any savings you make on the upfront price or cheap running costs can quickly disappear if the car is unreliable.
You might assume that small cars are some of the most reliable cars you can buy due to their compact stature and relative simplicity. This isn’t always the case, however, and with modern small cars featuring a lot of the complex technology found in larger models. Finding a reliable small car is as important as ever.
But how do you find out how reliable a car is other than from firsthand experience? By asking existing owners for their own firsthand experience, of course. That’s where the Driver Power survey comes in.
How are the most reliable small cars chosen?
In order to find out which small cars are the most reliable, the best people to ask are those who actually own them and use them day-to-day. The Driver Power customer satisfaction survey is where thousands of motorists tell us all about the car they drive and their experiences with it - good and bad.
The small cars included here are drawn from the city car, supermini, hatchback and small SUV sectors. They’re the compact models that scored the best in our most recent Driver Power survey for reliability.

1. Toyota Aygo X Mk3 - 94.09%
The third-generation Toyota Aygo X is pretty basic by modern standards, but what it lacks in flashiness it more than makes up for in reliability. They voted it to top position in the 2026 survey. According to the wider Driver Power survey results, Aygo X owners are also fond of their cars’ exterior design and fuel economy, but practicality is one of this car’s somewhat predictable downfalls.
2. Mazda CX-30 Mk1 - 93.37%
The Mazda CX-30 is one the larger cars on this list, but it’s still pretty compact by compact SUV standards. Thanks to its Mazda 3 hatchback underpinnings and the brand’s usual engineering skill, this is one of the most enjoyable compact SUVs from behind the wheel, although the trade-off is compromised practicality. Existing owners praised the driving experience across the board.
3. BMW 1 Series Mk3 - 91.79%
The BMW 1 Series might be a premium car but thankfully it isn’t incurring too many garage bills thanks to its solid reliability. As you’d expect from this German brand, there’s plenty of driving enjoyment to be found here, but where the third-generation model really shines is inside the cabin. Owners gave the 1 Series top marks for front seat comfort, as well as scoring it highly in areas such as the interior design and the quality of fit-and-finish, both inside and out.
4. Toyota Corolla Mk12 - 90.63%
Fewer people put as many miles or daily stress on their cars than minicab drivers, and the Mk12 Toyota Corolla has become a firm favourite on the taxi ranks. If that isn’t enough of a testament to the Corolla’s overall sturdiness, it’s also one of the most reliable small cars you can buy, according to Driver Power.
5. Peugeot 2008 Mk2 - 90.53%
The Peugeot 2008 may place a heavy emphasis on style, but it’s also proving to be very sturdy according to the people who drive them. Owners have been equally pleased with the exterior and interior styling of the 2008, and they’re also rather impressed with the level of fit and finish, rating it as the fifth best car of this year’s Driver Power bunch. Boot and storage space were seen as middling, though.
6. Vauxhall Crossland Mk1 - 90.34%
The Vauxhall Crossland might be small in stature, but it is a very reliable small SUV that’s a real hit with owners. Not only does the Crossland finish in the final podium place on this list, it also found itself within the top ten most reliable cars of 2026. You’ll have to take a look on the used market if you fancy a Crossland of your own, but you shouldn’t have to search too far for an example that's still covered by the original warranty.

7. BMW 2 Series Mk2 - 89.95%
It’s a 1-2 (Series) knockout for BMW as the 2 Series also makes an appearance on this leaderboard. Considering that this car shares a number of components with the 1 Series, it isn’t too much of a shock that both cars are holding up well against the tests of time and mileage. The 2 Series was voted as the better car for driving pleasure, though. In fact, it was voted as the very best car for driving pleasure out of everything in the 2026 Driver Power survey.
8. Toyota Yaris Cross Mk1 - 89.50%
Toyota is often referred to as one of the leaders in hybrid tech, and we don’t disagree with this theory. The Toyota Yaris Cross is one of several models (including the aforementioned Corolla) that’s driven by hybrid power and delivers plenty of trouble-free miles. Owners are also big fans of the smoothness of these powertrains, not to mention the sensible running costs.

9. Hyundai i10 Mk3 - 89.40%
As you might be able to tell from this list, the traditional city car market is as small as the cars themselves, and the Hyundai i10 has recently faced the axe. This is a shame, as our road testers think this is one of the small cars that feels most like a big car on the road, and its durability seems to speak for itself.
10. Kia Niro Mk2 - 89.16%
The Kia Niro offers a wide range of powertrains and plenty of practicality, and it’s also holding up well in the dependability stakes. As small family cars go, this one is a very tempting package, and owners have been praising its affordability, as it was the number one car for running costs in the 2026 Driver Power survey.
