Meccano is renowned for its traditional construction toys – but now it has launched a build-it-yourself radio-control car.

The 260-piece Turbo Pro model can be built as either a truck or a car – we opted for a red track car. The radio-controlled base and the hand remote arrive completed, but the bodyshell has to be built using the parts, spanner and hex key included. We took half a day to assemble it.

It’s recommended for children aged 7-14, but it’s not an easy task – always check your model matches the diagram before moving on, otherwise you have to go back and unscrew parts you have already assembled to get it right.

Putting the stickers on just before it hit the tarmac gave us a real sense of achievement. That adds to the fun when you drive it, but a lack of speed and poor handling disappoint. It’s a shame it’s not a replica of a real car – but it’s still a great toy.
