Garmin nüvi 2460LT

New sat-nav sits in the middle of firm's range, and combines hi-end features for less cost

Garmin nüvi 2460LT

We love the variety of features on Garmin’s top-spec 1695 sat-nav, and many are included on the new mid-range nüvi 2460LT. So, is it a match for its high-end stablemate – and should you save money by going for this?

The 2460LT incorporates voice control, to alter your destination without touching the screen, and Bluetooth hands-free phone connectivity.

It also benefits from Garmin’s ecoRoute HD functionality – so you can plug in the £100 optional dongle and see real-time diagnostic data about your car.

What’s more, the newcomer features a slightly revised windscreen mount, with an updated eject button to make removing it easier than before.

Navigation is accurate, the menus logical and the mapping easy to understand. But our main criticism has nothing to do with the 2460LT’s comprehensive list of features – also including PhotoReal Junction View, which lets you see a picture of your turn-off. Rather, it’s the fact it misses out on two key functions.

While the 1695 gets live traffic notifications, the 2460LT has to make do with Traffic Message Channel information. There’s no Google local search, either. Our current Best Buy – TomTom’s Via Live 120 – has live updates, and is cheaper, so this £220 Garmin is hard to recommend.

It’s worth waiting until later in the year. Bosses have assured us a cheaper device with live traffic will launch before Christmas.

Verdict

Price: £219.99
Rating: ★★★
Problems? No live traffic data included, high price tag.
So why buy? Easy to use screen, voice control, PhotoReal facility.
