Carrera Street Dreams slot car set

Price: £99.99 Rating: 3/5

Carrera Street Dreams

It’s your chance to drive two of the world’s most thrilling models – for less than £100.

The new Carrera Street Dreams slot car set comprises an Audi R8 and Porsche 911. The real things came first and third respectively in our Performance Car of the Year road test special.

Constructing the kit is easy, and we were up and running in less than 15 minutes.

The track assembles securely, and for more permanent layouts, clips are included to hold sections firmly together. The default configuration is a simple figure of eight, although you can vary the size and layout, as more than five metres of track is included.

Just bear in mind how much space the set takes up – you will need a clearing of around six feet by two feet. While the controls are easy to use, the trigger on ours felt notchy, which prevented smooth speed adjustment.

Each car is superbly detailed, with working lights and a life-like driver, but the build quality could have been better.

 * Problems? Need a lot of room, cars feel brittle and one of the controllers in our set was notchy.

 * So why buy? Cars are well detailed, large track, good value for money.
