Best Buy: Over £32,000

Winner: Mercedes E350 CDI Avantgarde Estate

Best Buy: Over £32,000

THE over-£32,000 class includes the cream of the tow car crop, but the Mercedes E350 CDI left the judges in no doubt about its credentials. This incredibly capable car claimed the crown with its blend of comfort, performance and practicality.

On the road, the seamless 7G-Tronic seven-speed automatic transmission always selects the right gear at the right moment. And as a refined cruiser, the powerful E-Class takes some beating as it wafts effortlessly along – even when towing an Olympus 642 caravan.

The van weighs 1,618kg, but with 540Nm of torque at its disposal, our model remained stable and unflappable around the high-speed bowl and our tortuous hill route. Under the bonnet, the 3.0-litre V6 is an impressive performer; it takes everything in its stride, including breezing up the Millbrook course’s 17 per cent hills.

Inside, leather seats provide a comfortable driving position. And even with this model’s lowered set-up, the standard-fit Direct Control sports suspension is effective on rough surfaces, while the self-levelling rear set-up keeps everything on an even keel. Light and precise steering also makes this estate even more appealing to tow a caravan with.

Admittedly, the Mercedes doesn’t come cheap – it is the most expensive car in this category – but you do get genuine value for money. If you want ultimate performance and phenomenal towing ability, then look no further – the E350 CDI could be exactly what you have been searching for.
