Skoda’s Citigo boasts a blend of manageable dimensions, roomy cabin, low running costs and smart looks.

There are four trim levels to choose from, including the entry-level S spec, SE, top of the range SE L and the stylish Monte Carlo model. SE spec is the sweet spot, with air-con and electric windows fitted as standard.

Go for the range topping SE L model and you’ll get alloy wheels, heated seats, sat-nav and Bluetooth, while the Citigo Monte Carlo features extra gloss black trim on the outside, Skoda’s entertainment pack, larger 15-inch alloys and tinted glass, as well as the connectivity tech from the SE L grade.

The engine range is simple, with only two units to choose from. It’s a 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol available with either 59bhp or 74bhp. Efficiency is good, with the entry-level unit returning 62.8mpg and 105g/km CO2 according to Skoda, while the GreenTech model improves this to 68.9mpg and 95g/km.

The higher-powered engine is only available in GreenTech guise and returns vital figures of 67.3mpg and 97g/km CO2, so it’s exempt from Vehicle Excise Duty, keeping running costs low, while a 251-litre boot on all models means it’s practical given its size.

An auto gearbox is available on both engines, but it’s the only weak point on the Citigo. Not only are changes a bit jerky, but it bumps the price up, too.
