Thanks to a large battery pack, the Porsche Taycan can travel around 300 miles on a single charge, which is comparable to a sports car with a full tank of petrol. Admittedly, recharging the Taycan takes longer than refuelling a 911, but rapid charging means a 10 to 80 per cent top-up charge takes under 20 minutes – provided you’re connected to a suitable fast rapid charger.

Porsche offers Taycan buyers three-years free access to the Ionity charging network, while Turbo Charging at selected Porsche Centres offers increased flexibility as it's possible to add 60 miles of range in around 4.5 minutes.

The entry-level Taycan has an 89kWh battery with a usable capacity of 82.3kWh. This provides a range of 313 to 367 miles. Opting for the 105kWh Performance Battery Plus ups the capacity to 105kWh (97kWh of which is useable) and increases the range to between 360 and 421 miles.

The Taycan 4S model has the same battery options and its range with the former is 295 to 346 miles, and with the latter it’s 341 to 399 miles. The smaller battery has 270kW charging capability and the larger one has a charging speed of up to 320kW, which means you can charge up from 10 to 80 per cent in 18 minutes.

Go for the more powerful Turbo, and the larger 97kWh battery comes as standard, delivering an electric range of between 346 and 391 miles. The Turbo S features the same 97kWh battery and offers a range of between 347 and 391 miles. All of these figures are based on the WLTP standard. What you achieve in the real world will depend on factors such as the weather, accessories used within the car, and how hard you drive. We achieved a very impressive 4.0 miles-per-kilowatt-hour efficiency on a dry 20-degree day doing predominantly motorway miles.

Finally, there’s the Turbo GT model, which also uses the larger battery size and manages between 328 and 344 miles. Charging any Taycan at home using a domestic wall box should take between 9 and 11 hours, depending on the charger and the battery size.

Insurance groups

The entry-level Taycan sits in group 47, while all other versions of the Porsche Taycan slot into insurance group 50, which places it alongside the world’s fastest and most expensive supercars. The Jaguar I-Pace, which offers nothing like the performance of the Taycan, is also in groups 49 and 50.

Depreciation

The residual values of the Porsche Taycan aren’t as strong as they once were. According to our experts, after three years or 36,000 miles, the Taycan range will be worth between 44 - 53 per cent, with the standard 4S version performing best and the priciest Turbo GT performing worst.
