One firm leads the way on warranty cover: Kia.

The Koreans’ seven-year new car guarantee is still setting the standard on the market, four years after it was introduced in the UK.

It’s designed as a ‘bumper-to-bumper’ policy, so owners are covered against the manufacturing failure of most mechanical items. Better still, the warranty stays with the car when it’s time to sell, which greatly enhances the appeal of a Kia to second-hand buyers.

As you’d expect, there is some small print.

The company imposes a limit of 100,000 miles, while there are one or two unusual exclusions. For instance, the hi-tech workings of the in-car stereo are only covered for three years or 60,000 miles.

It’s also worth noting Kia includes only a single year of breakdown recovery as part of the deal.

However, even these exceptions fail to dim the appeal of a package that brings incredible peace of mind. Better still, bosses have recently extended the guarantee to cover every model in the line-up, from the perky Picanto city car to the chunky Sorento SUV. So, which is the pick of the manufacturer’s range?

Well, if you want to match the hassle-free ownership experience with head-turning style, the new Sportage crossover gets the nod. With its rakish concept car-style looks, agile chassis and generous kit, it’s a genuine class contender – and that warranty brings real reassurance.
