Go to: How to replace the ABS power unit on a P38
• Step 1

The ABS power pump assembly is under the bonnet, between the battery and the ABS modulator. First depressurise the system.

• Step 2

Disconnect the multi-plug which is located at the rear of the ABS power pump. The spring retaining clip may need to be picked loose.

• Step 3

Located under this multi-plug is a second multi-plug which is the main power supply and will disconnect electrical power from the unit

• Step 4

The unit is secured to the valance on three rubber-mounted feet, two at the front and one at the rear. Undo and remove the nuts.

• Step 5

Using a suitable hose clamp, clamp off the hose connecting the reservoir to the power unit then remove the pipe from the power unit.

• Step 6

On the side of the unit, undo the banjo bolt on the high-pressure pipe, then remove the high-pressure pipe from the unit, along with the washer.

• Step 7

The complete ABS power unit should now be free, and you will be able to carefully lift it away from the engine bay.

• Step 8

In this case a used unit from a reliable source will be fitted to the vehicle at the owner’s request. It appears clean, with fluid openings plugged.

• step 9

On the replacement unit, a plug should be in the HP bore to stop dirt entering the pump. This can be removed prior to connecting.

• Step 10

A protective cap should have been fitted into the reservoir pipe entry to keep dirt out. This can also be removed prior to connecting.

• Step 11

Unless new ones have been supplied, before discarding the old unit remove the rubber mounts from the feet and fit them on to the replacement

• Step 12

Locate the replacement power unit correctly into position clear of other parts and refit the three securing nuts and tighten them.

• Step 13

Reconnect the two multi-plugs, then refit the hose from the reservoir to the replacement power unit, then remove the hose clamp.

• Step 14

Refit the banjo bolt through the high-pressure pipe and washer, then connect the high-pressure pipe to the replacement power unit

• Step 15

Once these pipes have been connected, the replacement ABS power unit should now be fully in position and working

• Step 16

The brake system may need to be bled. This should be done using the bleed screw on the side of the brake boost/ABS modulator.
