The VAT rate, temporarily lowered to 15 per cent last December, will stay in place until the end of the year, Chancellor Alistair Darling has confirmed. An announcement on whether the VAT will then go back up to 17.5 per cent in the new year, or even rise to a new hiked rate of 18.5 per cent, should follow shortly.
