Best Used Large SUV
The cars wearing Land Rover's Green Oval might be pricy these days, but as this award proves, they're worth the extra cash.
Winner: Land Rover Discovery 3
(2004 to date) Prices: £12,250-£32,500
The Discovery 3 is our favourite second-hand large SUV for the third year running! The evergreen 4x4 is unbeatable off-road and has one of the best interiors in its class. Land Rover’s reliability has come on leaps and bounds in recent years. Previous Discos were riddled with problems, but the Discovery 3’s sixth place finish in our Driver Power 2010 survey is exceptional.
There have been recalls for fuel leaks and issues with the auto gearbox, so it’s worth contacting Land Rover with the car’s registration before you buy. The 2.7-litre V6 diesel is our choice as it returns 27.7mpg, which is par for the course in a vehicle as heavy as the Disco. High-spec HSE models are packed with kit, so they’re second-hand bargains.
Early Discos are as cheap as they’ve ever been, but values are relatively steady at the bottom of the market. The biggest bargains are with nearly new Disco 3s, as the launch of the Discovery 4 has hit values. Land Rover garages generally offer good service and their used approved scheme is strong, but independent dealers and private sellers will have the bargains.
Nearly New: BMW X5
(2007 to date) Prices: £24,000-£48,000
The latest X5 is handsome, and although not cheap, you can save big by buying nearly new. The 3.0d is the best all-rounder, blending 38.2mpg economy with smooth performance. Most cars will still be covered by the manufacturer warranty, too.
Value Choice: BMW X5
(2000-2007) Prices: £7,000-£20,000
BMW’s first 4x4 looks great value second-hand. It’s not as capable as a Land Rover off-road, but excels on tarmac. Strong sales from new mean there are plenty of examples around. Our choice is the 3.0d Sport – it’s efficient with plenty of kit.
