Peugeot’s hot-hatch back catalogue is so rich in elecrifying product, it feels criminal that the 309 GTi finds itself in seventh spot.
Considered by some to be a sharper-steering and more resolved hot hatch than the 205 GTi with which it shares many parts, the 309 didn’t enjoy as much time in the limelight as its smaller stablemate. Its 128bhp 1.9-litre engine was powerful enough to propel the sub-1,000kg three or five-door, with its lower, stiffer chassis and stiffer bodyshell, to the top of the class on both road and track.
